The dimension of usage is divided into a common usage which corresponds to the widespread use in community, and correct usage, which has been legislated by philological knowledge and which is, for this reason, the criteria for linguistic correction on which the ideal of a homogeneous linguistic community is based.

استعمال سائد عند متكلّمين ينتمون إلى جماعة لغوية بحيث تكون طريقة التعبير التي يعتمدونها هي الأكثر رواجًا في حالة تواصل محدّدة.
- الملاحظة
تجدر الإشارة هنا إلى ما درج على تسميته بالأخطاء الشائعة وهي مجموعة من الاستعمالات اللغوية المعاصرة تخالف أصول اللغة نحوًا أو صرفًا أو إملاءً شاعت في الكتب ووسائل الإعلام المكتوبة والمسموعة والمرئية، فقبلها بعضهم بسبب انتشارها الواسع في حين صنّفها بعضهم الآخر في خانة الخطأ الشائع.
