- A mode of translation that involves software applications created with the specific purpose of facilitating the speed and consistency of human translators, thus reducing the overall costs of translation projects while maintaining the earnings of the contracted translators and an acceptable level of quality.
- Observation
1- CAT systems fundamentally enable the reuse of past (human) translation held in so-called translation memory (TM) databases, and the automated application of terminology held in terminology databases. These core functionalities may be supplemented by others such as alignment tools, to create TM databases from previously translated documents, and term extraction tools, to compile searchable term bases from TMs, bilingual glossaries, and other documents. CAT systems may also assist in extracting the translatable text out of heavily tagged files, and in managing complex translation projects with large numbers and types of files, translators and language pairs while ensuring basic linguistic and engineering quality assurance.
2- CAT Systems have variously been known in both the industry and literature as CAT tools, TM, TM tools (or systems or suites), translator workbenches or workstations, translation support tools, or latterly translation environment tools (TEnTs).
3- Since many translators are avid technology users, a wide range of tools could fall under the heading of CAT. However, this term is typically reserved for software designed specifically with the translation task proper in mind, rather than tools intended for general applications (e.g., word processors, spelling checkers, e-mail).4- CAT contrasts with machine translation (MT), which refers to translation that is carried out principally by computer but may involve some human intervention, such as pre-editing or post-editing.5- The integration of TM (translation memory) with MT gives CAT users the choice of continuing working the traditional way (accepting or repairing exact matches, repairing or rejecting the fuzzy ones and translating from the source the no matches) or to populate those no matches with MT solutions for treatment akin to conventional fuzzy matches: modify if deemed helpful enough, or discard and translate from scratch.

1- يجدر التمييز بين الترجمة بمساعدة الحاسوب والترجمة الآلية التي تقوم بها الآلة بشكل أساسي علمًا أنّ التدخل البشري ممكن قبل عملية الترجمة (التنقيح السابق للترجمة الآلية) أو بعدها (التنقيح اللاحق للترجمة الآلية).
2- تشمل برامج الترجمة بمساعدة الحاسوب ذاكرات الترجمة، وقواعد البيانات المصطلحية، والكشاف السياقي، والقواميس الإلكترونية وتلك المتوفّرة على شبكة الإنترنت، وبنوك المصطلحات، وبرامج رصف النصوص، إلخ. كما تشمل برامج الترجمة بمساعدة الحاسوب أنظمة الترجمة الآلية نتيجة تحسّن نوعية الترجمات الآلية الخام، فأصبح التنقيح اللاحق للترجمة الآلية ضمن المهام التي يضطلع بها المترجم.
