Si respecter le génie d’une langue ne signifie pas se borner à respecter les normes lexicales, syntaxiques et stylistiques d’une langue, la créativité individuelle va cependant de pair avec le respect des normes. L’espace de liberté du traducteur n’est pas infini mais, comme tout locuteur, il est loin d’être canalisé dans une voie unique pour communiquer des idées qu’il a faites siennes ; certains de ses choix répondent à des habitudes langagières qui lui sont propres : prédilection pour certains mots, pour certaines tournures, choix d’un style qui cadre avec le style de l’auteur sans en imiter servilement les formes.

A translation that reproduces the meaning in the source language in the natural forms of the receptor language both in the grammatical constructions and in the choices of lexical items. It does not sound like translation. It sounds like it was written originally in the receptor language (i.e. in the ‘spirit’ of that language).

A text which has been written in the ‘spirit’ of one language calls for an equivalent text in the ‘spirit’ of the other language. Having said that respecting the spirit of a language does not mean restricting expression solely to its lexical, syntactic and stylistic norms, we must of course point out that individual creativity must still operate within these norms. The freedom which translators operate in may not be infinite but communicating ideas which have become their own is by no means restricted to one option. In fact, translators tend to choose options answering language habits which they personally favour – an affinity for certain words, certain expressions, a particular style – choices which may coincide with the author’s without slavishly imitating their forms.
