- Définition
Produit de la synthèse des significations linguistiques et des compléments cognitifs pertinents d’un segment de texte ou de discours qui résulte de la déverbalisation de la chaîne sonore (ou graphique) au moment où connaissances linguistiques et compléments cognitifs fusionnent. À la fois cognitif et affectif, il correspond à un état de conscience.
- Contexte
Le sens, donc, aurait deux vies… L’une réelle, issue de l’analyse rigoureuse du texte de départ et des circonstances communicationnelles entourant celui-ci – analyse qui fait suite à une appréhension globale, psychologique ou somatique. L’autre d’une tout autre nature, issue de la reformulation des idées. Cette reformulation, linguistique et rédactionnelle, donne ou non vie au sens appréhendé. C’est essentiellement d’elle que dépendra le succès de la démarche de traduction.

1- Sens et signification étaient (et sont encore) utilisés soit indifféremment l’un pour l’autre, soit dans des sens différents par différents auteurs. […] Dans la théorie du sens, la nécessité de normaliser la terminologie s’est imposée et, ainsi, le terme ‘signification’ a été réservé pour les mots et les phrases [isolées], et le terme ‘sens’ a été employé pour les textes ou segments de textes.
2- Les unités de sens se chevauchent et se fondent les unes dans les autres pour former des sens.
- Definition
Outcome that can be construed from the synthesis of linguistic meanings and their own relevant cognitive inputs of a segment of text or speech. It is the result of deverbalization, when language knowledge and cognitive inputs fuse together. It is a conscious state of mind and is both cognitive and affective.
- Context
In the Letter #57: To Pammachius [On the Best Mode of Translation] St Jerome said : «
… I not only admit, I freely proclaim that in translating from the Greek – except in the case of the Holy Scriptures, where even the syntax is itself a mystery, I render sense for sense, not word for word. […] my sole purpose was to show that, from my adolescence on, I have always aimed at translating the sense, not the words – read and reflect on the brief preface from the biography of St. Antony of Egypt:
A literal translation from one language to another obscures the sense. Just as with grass, too lush a growth reduces the yield. So long as diction is subject to cases and figures of speech, a literal translation has to explain by tiresome circumlocution what might be conveyed in a few words. I have tried to avoid this error in translating, at your request, the life of St. Antony. Although I am not always literal, I have been fully loyal to the sense. Let others chase after syllables and exact equivalents; give your attention to the substance.

- التعريف
حصيلة التقاء الدلالات اللغوية بالمكمّلات المعرفية السديدة لمقطع من النص أو من خطاب، والمتأتية عن تحصيل المعنى لدى انعتاق السلسلة الصوتية (أو المكتوبة) من الألفاظ لحظة انصهار المعارف اللغوية في المكمّلات المعرفية. والمعنى حالة إدراك وهو معرفي وانفعالي في آن معًا.
- الملاحظة
1- تُستخدم لفظتا « دلالة » و « معنى » إما كمترادفَين وإما كلفظتَين مختلفتَي المعنى في الترجمية. أما في نظرية المعنى، وبغرض توحيد المصطلحات، فخُصص مصطلح « دلالة » للألفاظ والجمل المنفردة في حين اعتُمد مصطلح « معنى » للنصوص أو أجزاء منها.
2- تتداخل وحدات المعنى وتنصهر لتشكّل « المعنى ».
- المثل
في المثل التالي، ضاع المعنى بسبب لجوء المترجمة إلى الترجمة بالحرف وتغاضيها عن التلاعب بالكلام ومعنى العبارة الاصطلاحية بالفرنسية «entre chien et loup» التي تدلّ على وقت محدّد في اليوم يخفّ فيه الضوء بحيث يتعذّر التمييز بين الكلاب والذئاب، مع الإشارة إلى أنّ الكلاب ترمز في الفرنسية إلى النهار والضوء والنشاط في حين ترمز الذئاب إلى الليل، والظلمة والخوف.
