Le plus petit segment de l’énoncé dont la cohésion des signes est telle qu’ils ne doivent pas être traduits séparément. Les UT permettent d’effectuer le découpage d’un texte. 

1- Pour , cette UT, telle que définie par Vinay et Darbelnet,  existe et ne disparaîtra pas. Elle établit un lien entre la langue de départ et la langue d’arrivée, mais étant donné que son statut linguistique ne tient compte ni du contexte ni de la situation, elle n’a finalement de validité que pour les correspondances entre mots, syntagmes, locutions figées, phrases. 

2- En remplaçant l’unité de traduction par l’unité de sens, Lederer et Seleskovitch incitent les traducteurs à s’éloigner des considérations purement linguistiques (centrées sur le mot ou la phrase) pour privilégier la dimension sémantique du processus traductif (orientée vers le syntagme).

3- Dans les logiciels de TAO,  une mémoire de traduction est un ensemble d’unités de traduction, chaque unité de traduction associant un segment source et un segment cible. 

4 – Notion paradoxale en traductologie, l’unité de traduction a été définie selon différents cadres théoriques. Ballard, par exemple, a une vision complexe de l’UT, qu’il situe entre les langues source et cible : « L’unité de traduction n’est pas une unité du texte de départ, qui est une unité à traduire, pas plus qu’une unité du texte d’arrivée, qui est une unité traduite. En terme d’action du traducteur, je conçois l’UT comme un balayage articulé qui part de la construction du sens (opération fondamentale ou de base) pour produire des équivalences (seconde phase de l’opération) visant à la réécriture d’un texte, dont la cohérence et l’acceptabilité va générer un troisième type d’interventions de la part du traducteur, interventions qui souvent visent à restituer le liant du texte et ses qualités pragmatiques. »

5- Dans , une distinction claire est établie entre l’unité de traduction et l’unité de sens dans ce tableau synoptique :

1- The concept of translation unit has been variously defined according to the theoretical framework within which it has been addressed. Vinay & Darbelnet […] fail to integrate it within a theory or at least a comprehensive vision of translation; their definition may seem attractive because it includes the notion of cohesion […] but the trouble is that they mainly deal with lexical problems and, more questionably, foster the idea that one can isolate translation units from the source text. Seleskovitch & Lederer (1984), in accordance with their theory, describe the translation unit as a unit of sense gathered from a segment of discourse (a small number of words) that will contribute to the construction of the deverbalized sense of the whole message to be re-expressed in the target language. Christiane Nord (1997) offers a functionalist approach of the matter: to the classical view of translation unit as an ‘horizontal’ segment she adds the notion of ‘vertical’ unit, which gathers a collection of elements scattered in the text and contributing to its function.

2- For , a unit of translation is initiated by a translator when he applies a translation strategy to a segment or element of the source text (which is the base of the unit) with a view to producing a segment or element (the outcome of the unit) that will contribute to the reconstruction of a new entity that will be perceived as a text. The observation of translation corpora should enable us, from the comparison of source and target texts, to trace back, through analysis and inference, to the translator’s acts (interpretation, choices in rewording and rewriting) that caused the translated text to be what it is.
