Défaut de méthode qui consiste à choisir systématiquement entre plusieurs possibilités de traduction toutes acceptables, y compris la traduction littérale, la tournure dont la forme est la plus éloignée de l’expression originale.

- Definition
Human universal capacity for communication using linguistic signs, both in written and spoken form.
- Context
Langage : Saussure’s first English translator, Baskin, translates this as “human speech”. But other Saussure scholars, including Harris, suggest it should be translated as “human language” in general. Langage in this generalized sense, according to Saussure, is many-sided and heterogenous; it straddles many fields and kinds of phenomena–physical, physiological, psychological; both individual and social.

أهلية يتمتّع بها البشر للتواصل شفهيًا وكتابيًا بواسطة اللغات.
- الملاحظة
لا يُجمِع المتخصّصون على استخدام لفظة « لسان » للدلالة على هذا المفهوم فيفضّلون لفظة « لغة » علمًا أنّ:
أ- عبارة « لسان العرب » تدلّ على لغتهم وكلامهم. وكان اللغوي العربي ابن جِنّي (ت 392 هـ) قد عرّف اللغة على « أنّها أصوات يعبّر بها كلّ قوم عن أغراضهم ».
ب- عنوان كتاب لويس جان كالفي الشهير La guerre des langues et les politiques linguistiques في ترجمة د. حسن حمزة التي أصدرتها المنظمة العربية للترجمة جاء كالآتي: حرب اللغات والسياسات اللغوية.
