Le traducteur devra […] distinguer entre ce qui est imposé au rédacteur et ce que celui-ci a utilisé librement. […] En LD ce sont surtout les options qui doivent retenir l’attention. En LA le traducteur devra compter avec les servitudes qui entravent sa liberté d’expression et il devra aussi savoir choisir entre les options qui s’offrent à lui pour rendre les nuances du message.

Dans la mesure où la langue nous est donnée, elle est un ensemble de servitudes auxquelles nous sommes contraints de nous soumettre. Par exemple, le genre des mots, la conjugaison des verbes, l’accord des mots entre eux. […] Le subjonctif en français après « avant que » est un exemple de servitude.

لفظة (أو مصطلح) تربطها علاقة تراتبية بلفظة أخرى (أو بمصطلح آخر) تغطي حقلًا دلاليًا أوسع من الحقل الدلالي المقصود.
- الملاحظة
إنّ ترجمة اسم الكلّ في النص المصدر باسم الجزء في النص الهدف يؤدّي أحيانًا إلى خطأ في الترجمة.
- المثل
عند ترجمة الجملة التالية من اللغة الفرنسية إلى اللغة العربية، على المترجم أن يحرص على عدم استعمال اسم الكل « الجَمَل » أو « الناقة » أو « سفينة الصحراء » في هذا السياق كمقابل للفظتَي dromadaire وchameau والبحث عن اسم الجزء المناسب حرصًا منه على ضرورة التمييز بين الحيوانَين.
ترجمة سديدة النص المصدر الفرق الأبرز بين الجَمَل العربي والجَمَل الآسيوي هو أن الأول وحيد السنام فيما الثاني ثنائي السنام. أضف إلى ذلك أنّ الجَمَل العربي أطول من الجَمَل الآسيوي. La différence la plus connue est que le dromadaire n’a qu’une bosse, alors que le chameau en a deux. Le dromadaire est aussi plus grand que le chameau.
