Notion contestée en traductologie selon laquelle un énoncé en langue source ne peut pas être restitué en langue cible en raison d’écarts culturels, linguistiques et/ou stylistiques.

1- L’intraduisibilité peut subsister au niveau linguistique et non pas au niveau du discours. Le vide lexical existe bel et bien mais il ne pose de problème à la pratique que lorsque des termes désignent dans une langue des objets ou des coutumes qui n’existent pas dans la civilisation d’arrivée ; il s’agit alors de différences culturelles (mets, mœurs, etc.), de nouveautés scientifiques ou techniques ; avant  le mot, c’est l’objet qui est en cause et qu’il s’agit de faire comprendre. Les solutions adoptées vont de l’emprunt à l’explication dans le courant du texte en passant par la note du traducteur.

Disputed notion in translation studies describing a situation where an utterance expressed in a source language cannot be rendered in the target language due to cultural, linguistic and/or stylistic gaps.

Untranslatability mostly appears in relative form, as a matter of aspect, kind or degree. There always remains an untranslatable rest, for instance in the shape of connotation, nuance or poetic quality.

The consensus now seems to be that absolute untranslatability, whether linguistic or cultural, does not exist. The notion of untranslatability has been unpopular in the twentieth century mainly due to ideological reasons. With the expansion in the concept of translation in the twentieth century, the debate on translatability versus untranslatability loses part of its validity, since the various strategies that translators can resort to when confronted with a gap between two languages or two cultures are acknowledged as sound translation mechanisms. At the same time, it is assumed that the perfect translation, i.e. one which does not entail any losses from the original is unattainable, especially when dealing with literary translation. A practical approach to translation must accept that, since not everything that appears in the source text can be reproduced in the target text, an evaluation of potential losses has to be carried out.

Faute de traduction qui consiste à omettre dans le texte d’arrivée les compensations, étoffements ou explicitations qu’exige une traduction idiomatique et conforme au sens attribué au texte de départ par le traducteur.

A translation error where the translator omits in the target text any compensations, amplifications or explicitations required in order to obtain an idiomatic translation that conforms to the presumed sense of the source text.
