A statement that derives from a translation principle and governs translators’ decisions when they reformulate a segment of the source text in the target language.
1- Translation rules are generally more concrete and specific than translation principles.
2- In a given text, the translation rules vary as a function of the [translator’s aim] (ex.: target-oriented, source-oriented), the translation strategy adopted for the project (ex.: global adaptation, selective translation), the text type (ex. biblical, literary, technical, or scientific), the selected mode of discourse (ex. : argumentative, narrative) and the translator’s [purpose] (ex.: to demonstrate, inform, persuade).

“An advertising translation needs to take the expectations of the target audience into account.” This rule is derived from the translation principle that states that, “Insofar as possible, the target text should transmit the same denotative and connotative information as the source text.” The rule can be put into concrete practice by applying one of the many available translation procedures, such as adaptation or the coinage of new terms.

A translator who tries to foreignize the target text in order to provide the reader with a view of the original form of the foreign text.
